Why Do My Teeth Sting for a While When I Drink Something Cold?
Sudden, sharp, shooting pain from something cold, in a nutshell, usually means the dentin underneath is exposed, whether from worn enamel, a cavity, or an exposed root, and finding its root cause depends on whether one tooth is affected or multiple. The complete explanation for each cause is in our Complete Tooth Sensitivity System.
What It Means If It’s One Tooth or Multiple Teeth
One tooth, or one spot. A single location usually means a single cause sitting at that site, like gum recession, a cavity, a filling that could be failing, or a root that has just been uncovered after a deep clean.
Multiple teeth, usually representing a different pattern. Acid acting on the teeth frequently, whether from diet or from the stomach, recent whitening product use, or years of hard brushing with an abrasive paste.

Why Exposed Roots Sting?
Enamel has no sensation because it has no nerves, but the layer underneath called dentin does, and because it is full of tiny channels running towards the nerve, these channels have fluid present in them, which reacts to cold, which is why you feel the sting.
The crown of a tooth is covered in enamel, but the root isn’t, so when the gum recedes, there is nothing between the cold and those channels.

When Enamel Just Gets Thinner With Age
Enamel wears through a lifetime of normal use, and as it gets thin, more of the yellow layer, dentin, shows through, so the whole tooth looks a bit more yellowish in color, and this is normal gradual wear of enamel.
Acid Erosion Effect on Enamel May Also Signal Gut Issues
This has a different look, thin and glassy rather than just worn, and the line between the yellow layer and the white enamel around it is sharp instead of gradual. When the acid comes from reflux, it tends to show on the inner surfaces of several teeth at once.

FAQs
Does sensitive toothpaste actually work?
Yes, but only to a certain degree; the correct method is to apply it to the sensitive tooth or teeth, leave it for a few minutes, then rinse.
Can this be a cavity?
Possible, and this needs a clinical examination to rule out properly.
Why did it start suddenly?
Sensitivity usually builds quietly and then crosses a line you notice in a single week.
Should I stop drinking cold things?
Best to avoid until sensitivity settles, and get it checked if it does not.
